Miko Luha on WOW loovjuht

Miko Luha - Creative Lead in WOW

Miko needs no introduction, he has been involved with WOW team for many years. But we are glad that since this summer we have had the opportunity to see Miko's happy face again every morning! His jokes never end and Miko has more event ideas than there are companies in Estonia.

As Miko himself says, to develop creativity, try 100 different jobs, some knowledge will stick to from each of them. Miko has been a forklift driver in a warehouse, participated in archaeological excavations, installed windows in high-rise buildings, sold legal insurance, assembled furniture, been in airport check-in desk, sold suits in a department store, worked as a right-hand man in a law firm, assisted a lawyer in building airlines, was a consultant in aviation, was an office manager for a cargo airline, was a crew and flight planner for a private jet company, done some graphic design, was a marketer, was a customer and user support person at a startup, and of course was and is an event organizer.

On his own initiative, Miko has dabbled in 3D printing, laser engraving, game creation, written fairy tales, and created a card game.

Miko, what drew you back to WOW?

Miko, mis see on, mis sind WOW-sse tagasi tõmbas?

La Cosa Nostra of entertainment!

The translation for La Cosa Nostra is “This thing of ours”. If we put it into Estonian and flush it through Miko’s filter, the translation would be: “WOW is my second family and this the best job in the world”, that’s what drew me back!

If you had to explain to aliens what you do on a daily basis, what would it be?

When (NOT IF) we meet, they'll definitely know everything about me, but okay, let's try.

"Hello, I'm Miko, I make people happy and offer fun times. You can also be on that list. If you feel that you might get bored on the way to your home planet, take me with you and I'll entertain the whole crew. If necessary, I'll organize your company's Christmas party (do you have Christmas?). If necessary, I'll offer fun activities to help you travel the Milky Way faster. As a reward, I would like to ask you for one technological secret/innovation that I could bring back to Earth and that would make life better for homo sapiens. Deal?"

If inventing were a profession, it would suit you wonderfully. What are the inventions and ideas that you are particularly proud of?

They can be classified into two categories:

1) Things that make people smile.

2) Things that make the planet smile.

There are many varieties from both in my portfolio, not everything has been realized yet, but in time it will.

You have taken on the role of creative director and green director of WOW. What changes do you want to implement?

The Green Leader title fell into my lap completely by accident, but I am happy to hold it tightly in my arms. For example, one of my goals is to develop an app that shows the footprint of an event. Other is to train project managers to think green when organizing events. Third one is to invent some sort of green mentality oriented fun activites and games for events.

As a creative director, I want to broaden the worldview of my colleagues from absolutely every area of life, in order to generate even more colorful ideas when organizing events together. I also strive to ensure that the entire WOW team and the Creative Union group comes to the office with a smile on their face, which I intend to do mainly through the prism of surprises and offering unique experiences.

Igal juhul – pidu tuleb!

Kõigepealt tuleb vastata suurele küsimusele: miks me üldse pidu korraldame?

Üheks selliseks mõjutajaks on sündmused.

Kuigi sündmused võivad esmapilgul tunduda pelgalt meelelahutusliku või sotsiaalse tegevusena, on nende majanduslik ja strateegiline tähtsus ettevõtetele märkimisväärne. Sündmuste korraldamine on ettevõtete jaoks oluline turundustööriist mitmel põhjusel:

Tiina Kaldma  – 5 aastat loovat projektijuhtimist

Tiina Kaldma - 5 years of creative project management

Congratulations, Tiina! Our Event Project Manager Tiina Kaldma has completed 5 years as a member of the WOW Events team. In this rapidly changing world, 5 years is a milestone worth celebrating! So – congratulations to us for being able to keep and value her.

Dear Tiina, tell us the story of how you got into event management?

Olavi Ruhno invited me and when I said that I had no experience in this field, his answer was that in event management, it is not experience in this specific field that counts, but life experience. And he was right, because it has been easy to learn new things if you have a broad horizon and a talent for organizing. This job is not for everyone, because it is more of a lifestyle than a job. Creativity is also useful, which is needed both in solving situations and in proposing new ideas.

I like working in a small team where you do everything that needs to be done. It's great when every day is unique and there's relatively little routine. It suits me and I would get bored otherwise. It's also definitely been beneficial that I try to keep my eyes open as much as possible everywhere and see what's happening a little further away from me - a broad horizon and my own interests definitely add a lot.

What personal qualities have been useful when working in event management?

You have to be very tolerant and can't look at everything from just your own perspective (although you often really want to do that).
Patience is definitely a great virtue – I don't always excel at it. It still gets annoying sometimes when you stumble upon something irrational, but then you have to breathe in and out, and just move on.

I would consider flexibility to be the most important thing, and I am very good at it. Often we are the link between the client and a service provider, and it is not always easy to find a solution that suits everyone right away. We then set an example to others and try to be flexible. Hopefully we get the same in return.

What does your favorite client look like?

A good client is open and friendly. With some clients I will have a great rapport after a brief encounter, while others will take longer to develop. I must admit that I can't immediately remember any client who makes you shake your head and think, "huhh, how terrible." If you yourself are open and friendly and communicate pleasantly and do as promised or a even little more, then there is no direct reason for the client to be grumpy and unpleasant. So far, I guess I have been blessed with good clients.

What is the one element without which it is not possible to have a good event?

You can't have a good event without good guests/participation.
The program can be awesome, the food delicious, and the party venue perfect, but if the people aren't on board, then nothing will work. We always give 110% and a little more to put together the party according to the target audience. But if we've been given wrong information from the start, it can end up so that the client really, really likes everything, but the majority of the even participants don't appreciate it at all. Ultimately, the client isn't happy with the party either, because the guests weren't happy. But who is to blame at this point...?!

Tiina, we glad you are with us!
